New Perspectives on Immersive Experiences

As part of this year’s workshop series by Page 21, in cooperation with the Fellowship for New Arts “No End to the Road” of Kulturforum Witten, two new immersive works by Mayuko Kudo and Lukas Schäfer have been created. These works will be presented at the Next Level Festival and open up new perspectives on the creative use of immersive technologies.

In “river (immersive version)” by Mayuko Kudo, the digital space transforms into a poetic and fragile intermediate realm where perception, body, and memory converge at the boundary between life and death, and the very act of entering becomes a silent reflection on transience and belonging.

Rayleigh” by Lukas Schäfer is an audiovisual piece that explores the interplay of sound and light. Slowly flowing color gradients and atmospheric sounds permeate the immersive space at Dortmunder U. Inspired by the subtle light phenomena of Rayleigh scattering during sunrises and sunsets, the work invites visitors to re-experience their perception of color and sound and to experience the space as a changing composition.

Accompanying the presentation, a workshop discussion with the artists and the Page 21 team will take place at 2 PM in the foyer of Dortmunder U. During this, they will provide insights into the creation of their works, discuss the connection between artistic process and technology, and explore possibilities for collaborative working methods.

The Page 21 project is an artistic research project and a cooperation between StoryLab kiU and Dortmunder U, Museum Ostwall, and the Museum of Art and Cultural History Dortmund.

The Fellowship for New Arts “No End to the Road” of Kulturforum Witten offers young artists creative freedom, resources, and visibility, and supports innovative artistic positions that evolve at the intersection of digital technologies.

Mayuko Kudo
Lukas Schäfer

Mayuko Kudo, born in Ōita, Japan, is a media artist focusing on site-specific art projects at the intersection of virtual and physical reality. She currently works as a Digital Content Creator and has been participating as an Artist Fellow in the “No End to the Road – Rethinking Culture” program at the Kulturforum Witten (NRW) since 2025. In parallel, she leads the ongoing initiative “Saalbau Witten Metaverse Cultural Simulation”, a project independently developed and realized in collaboration with the Kulturforum Witten as part of the NRW KULTURsekretariat’s #ARTInProgress funding program. Her responsibilities include the conceptual development and implementation of Metaverse-based content.

Lukas Schäfer is a composer and musician who uses analog synthesizers and electroacoustic drums. In 2020, he founded the collective “Sono” for ambient and spatial music with six musicians, a designer, and a visual artist. Lukas’ works are predominantly collaborative: he has already realized expansive and audiovisual concert formats and installations in a wide variety of locations. His goal is to combine his own music with other media such as light, video, AR/VR and make it accessible to a broad audience. The focus of his work is the development of site-specific sound works that deal with history and the culture of remembrance.
